I have been acting as a trusted advisor to senior leaders in organisations for about 20 years. My status as an independent consultant provides the right circumstances to play that role.

What is the confidentiality basis of the conversation?
Completely confidential.
What expertise do you bring to this?
Experience of senior leadership roles and of working with more than 180 organisations and a wide range of expertise in leadership and organisation development and coaching.
What do you mean by “sense-making”?
Sense-making means interacting with a situation to develop a structured understanding of it from which intervention steps can be developed. Often the process is iterative: develop some understanding, take some action, observe results, deepen understanding, adjust actions etc.
Is “trusted adviser” the same as “critical friend” or even “sounding board”?
Essentially, yes. These are different labels for much the same thing. The key characteristic is bringing honesty to the relationship and finding ways to talk about difficult subjects – whilst being completely supportive.
Do you give advice?
The label “trusted adviser” suggests that, but actually the answer is not really – more like providing an opinion, or suggestions or a “take” on a situation. Giving advice would be more like mentoring. That’s something different. This is more of an equal partnership.
Is knowledge of my sector or organisation important?
It’s not essential but it certainly helps, particularly with making sense of a situation. Knowledge of other people in the environment in particular is often very helpful.
